Why Persian Rugs Are Never Cleaned on Your Floor
If someone offers to bring a machine to your villa and clean a hand-knotted Persian rug in place, say no.
Three things go wrong. Natural dyes in older Persian rugs are not colourfast the way synthetic carpet dyes are, so soaking them without testing first can bleed red into ivory permanently. Second, a hand-knotted rug has a cotton warp and weft foundation that distorts when it’s soaked and dried unevenly, leaving you with a rug that no longer lies flat. Third, drying. A rug left to dry on your floor in Dubai humidity stays damp at the foundation for days, and that’s where browning and mildew start.
The rug leaves the building. That’s the whole point of specialist Persian rug cleaning, and it’s the first thing that separates a rug cleaner from a carpet cleaner.
Rugs We Hand Wash
Persian & Iranian Rugs (Kashan, Tabriz, Isfahan, Qom)
City-workshop rugs with high knot density and fine wool or wool-on-silk pile. These carry the most valuable and most dye-sensitive pieces we handle. Older Kashan and Tabriz rugs in particular often have madder-red dyes that need careful testing before immersion.
Operator note: knot density matters for cleaning, not just value. A tightly knotted Isfahan holds dirt at the base far more stubbornly than a loose village weave, so it needs longer dusting before washing.
Silk & Fine Silk-Blend Rugs
Silk loses its lustre under aggressive agitation and cannot take the water temperature wool tolerates. These get the gentlest handling we do: cool water, minimal agitation, pH-neutral solution, and hand finishing. Silk also takes the longest to dry.
Wool, Afghan, Turkish & Kilim
Hand-spun wool is more forgiving than silk but still needs wool-safe, pH-neutral detergent rather than standard carpet shampoo. Kilims are flat-woven with no pile, which means dirt sits differently and dye bleed shows faster. Afghan and Turkish pieces often come to us with heavy sand loading from years of use.
Viscose, Jute, Sisal & Delicate Fibres
Viscose is the most fragile fibre in the rug world. Soaked with the wrong solution, it yellows, stiffens, and never recovers. If you have a viscose rug, tell us at booking. Any company quoting the same rate for viscose as for wool hasn’t identified the fibre, which tells you what you need to know.
Antique & Vintage Pieces
Age brings dry rot in the foundation, previous repairs, thinning pile, and dyes that have already migrated once. We inspect and photograph condition before washing and tell you what’s realistic. Some antique rugs should be cleaned more gently and less often rather than restored to looking new.

Inspection, Fibre ID & Condition Report
We identify the fibre, check the foundation, note existing damage, previous repairs, and thinning areas, and photograph the rug before anything begins. Around 20 minutes per rug, and it’s your record as much as ours.
Colourfastness & Dye Bleed Testing
A damp white cloth is pressed against each colour in the rug and checked for transfer. This decides everything that follows: water temperature, whether the rug can be immersed at all, and which solution we use. Skipping this step is how rugs get ruined.
Dry Dusting — Removing Kilos of Sand
Before water, all dry soil comes out. The rug goes face-down on a dusting rack and the back is worked until nothing more falls. A 3x4m wool rug from a Dubai villa routinely releases one to two kilos of sand. Wet that sand first and it becomes mud locked in the foundation where no rinse reaches it.
Immersion Hand Wash
The rug is submerged and washed by hand with a wool-safe, pH-neutral solution, worked with soft brushes along the pile direction. Water temperature is set by the fibre and the dye test, not by habit. This is the stage machines cannot replicate on a hand-knotted rug.
Rinse & Controlled Water Extraction
Rinsed until the water runs clear, then water is drawn out under control rather than wrung or spun aggressively. Getting the moisture out fast is what protects against dye migration in the drying stage.
Flat Drying in Controlled Conditions
The rug dries flat, never hung over a rail, in a controlled space with air movement. Hanging a wet hand-knotted rug distorts the foundation under its own weight. Drying takes one to four days depending on fibre and pile thickness, and it is the stage that cannot be rushed.
Fringe Finishing, Grooming & Final Check
Fringes are cleaned by hand, the pile is groomed so it lies uniformly, and the rug is inspected against the pre-wash photographs before it goes back to you.
What We Can Fix — And What We Can't
Straight answers, because nobody else in this market gives them.
What washing removes: embedded sand and dust, pet hair, general soil, most food and drink stains, pet urine odour when treated at the source, musty and damp smells, and years of dulling that makes a rug look faded when it’s actually just dirty. Colours genuinely come back on a rug that hasn’t been washed in a decade.
What washing will not fix: bleach damage, which is missing dye rather than a stain and needs re-dyeing. Sun fading, which is permanent. Dry rot in an old foundation, where the rug is structurally weak and washing won’t strengthen it. Moth damage and missing pile. Dye migration that has already set from a previous bad wash. And stains that have been scrubbed hard by hand, where the fibre itself is distorted so the mark stays visible after the colour lifts.

How to Spot a Cleaner Who Will Damage Your Rug
Five warning signs, learned from rugs that reached us after someone else had a go:
- They want to clean it at your home. Hand-knotted rugs need immersion and flat drying. Neither happens in your living room.
- They quote a price without asking the fibre. Silk, wool, and viscose cannot be priced or washed the same way.
- No dye test is mentioned. Colourfastness testing takes ten minutes and prevents the single most common permanent damage.
- They promise a two-day turnaround on silk. Physically impossible with proper drying.
- They can’t say whether they’re insured. The rug’s value sits with whoever is holding it.
Dubai's Humidity and Why Drying Decides the Result
Washing a rug is straightforward. Drying it in Dubai is where jobs fail.
Coastal humidity runs high for much of the year, and a hand-knotted rug holds water deep in its cotton foundation long after the pile feels dry to the touch. Left in still, humid air, that trapped moisture causes browning, where natural tannins in the cotton wick to the surface and stain the pile. It also breeds mildew and leaves that damp smell owners assume was in the rug already.
Controlled flat drying with proper air movement is the answer, and it’s why our turnaround times are what they are. It’s also why we won’t hand a rug back early just because a customer is keen. A rug that feels dry on the surface and is still damp underneath will develop problems in your home, not ours.
Caring for Your Persian Rug Between Washes
Vacuum regularly, but never the fringes. A beater bar tears fringe knots. Use suction only, and vacuum the back occasionally as well as the front.
Rotate 180 degrees every six months. Sunlight fades unevenly, and traffic wears one path. Rotation spreads both.
Keep direct sunlight off it. UV fades natural dyes permanently, and in Dubai that happens faster than people expect through untreated glass.
Blot spills immediately; never rub. Rubbing pushes liquid into the foundation and distorts the pile. Blot with a white cloth from the outside in.
Move furniture occasionally. Heavy furniture crushes the pile flat. Shifting a sofa a few centimetres every few months prevents permanent compression marks.
How Often Should a Persian Rug Be Professionally Washed?
Every two to three years for a rug used in a typical household. Every 12 to 18 months for rugs in high-traffic areas, majlis spaces used for guests, homes with pets, or entrance and hallway runners.
Antique and fragile pieces go the other way: wash them less often and more gently, since every wash is a small amount of wear on an old foundation. Between washes, regular vacuuming does more for a rug’s lifespan than frequent cleaning does.
